Product Description
Leslie Hammond knows that left-out feeling all too well. As a child she suffered from severe food allergies and would watch year after year as, when the birthday song had ended and she'd blown out the candles, her fancy party cake was whisked away and served to her friends, while she ate a dry rice cake. Now the mother of allergic children herself, Leslie vowed to spare her own children that trauma. She had developed over 100 recipes that will appeal to a kid's tastes. Unlike other food-allergy cookbooks already on the market, her recipes hardly ever call for the kinds of ingredients that would gross out any kid -- like tofu.
The book's recipes take into account all of the most common food sensitivities like wheat and gluten, peanuts, or dairy. Each recipe can be modified to fit the dietary needs to the child.
It's divided into three sections -- snacks, main dishes, and treats. Leslie and co-author Lynne Rominger also provide information about how to find what you need in a regular grocery store, instead of requiring a separate trip to the natural foods store. She writes from the perspective of an ordinary working mom, and doesn't design eating regimes that would take all day in the kitchen to satisfy.
With the recipes in this book, even the most sensitive child will get a cookie too.

Almost all the recipes have dairy or eggs in them. The dairy-free and egg-free options are just to omit them. Great! Pick up any cookbook for that. I made one recipe from this book and it was awful. (A cake recipe that I had to use 3 substitutions for). There are much better cake recipes out there. This book is on its way to the used bookstore . . . 47 of 48 people found the following review helpful ![]() Diane "Danny&Sammy'sMom" (South Windsor, CT United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: The Kid-Friendly Food Allergy Cookbook: More Than 150 Recipes That Are Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Nut-Free, Egg-Free, and Low in Sugar (Paperback) I bought this book looking for recipes for my very picky son who is allergic to dairy, eggs, and nuts. I was very disappointed, because most of the recipes contained some or all of these ingredients (in spite of the misleading title), then included a note at the bottom to omit or substitute these ingredients. The author would have been better off making it clear upfront that this is a book for individuals with wheat allergies, rather than misleadingly trying to market it to such a broad group of people. One other thing...the book offers no pictures of the dishes it contains. Altogether it was a huge disappointment, and I returned it. I have found that, for my son's allergies, "What's to Eat the Milk-free, Egg-free, Nut-free Food Allergy Cookbook" by Linda marienhoff Coss, was a much better purchase. 35 of 35 people found the following review helpful ![]() CWB (Stanford, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: The Kid-Friendly Food Allergy Cookbook: More Than 150 Recipes That Are Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Nut-Free, Egg-Free, and Low in Sugar (Paperback) The title of this book states that the recipes are dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free, wheat-free, etc... I bought this book because my children have dairy, egg, and nut allergies and am looking for recipes that do not merely use substitions, but are thoughtfully tested to taste good without these ingredients. The majority of the recipes in this book contain dairy and/or eggs and then at the bottom of the recipe, it simply says to omit or substitute a non-dairy ingredient or egg replacer. Who needs an allergy cookook to tell you to do this? It was depressing to read a book full of supposedly allergy-friendly recipes and find that I had to substitute something in each recipe. The title is totally misleading and the book is useless and disheartening if you have anything but a wheat allergy. I have had MUCH better success with vegan cookbooks in which the recipes are actually planned and tested to avoid dairy and eggs. I would NOT recommend this book to anyone searching for allergy-free... Read more |
